Dream South Beach Opens with a Splash
Sharon Feiereisen
Growing up in New York City it’s easy to get jaded, especially when you end up working in an industry where you’re constantly out at various events and openings. In fact, in Manhattan everything seems to be worthy of a flashy affair, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres…not that I’m complaining, but a lot of the events tend to blend together. Leave it to Miami to blow my expectations for a memorable experience out of the park.
I was in South Beach the other week for Fashion Week Swim, which is a spectacle on its own – to give you an idea, the first thing you see when you walk into the Fashion Week tent is a Skyy Vodka open bar – but it’s the events that left the most lasting impression. Among the many that took place in the four day stretch was the opening of the Dream South Beach. The swanky boutique hotel’s opening was one of the week’s most buzzed about and with the recent successful opening of the Dream Downtown in New York City and the South Beach iteration’s central Collins Avenue location it’s easy to see why. Of course by central I mean it’s in arm’s length of The Webster, Intermix, the former Versace Mansion, and Barneys Co-op – some of South Beach’s essential must-sees.
The hotel itself features 108 rooms, a restaurant called Tudor House by celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian (think Food Network’s Chopped and 24 Hour Restaurant Battle), a Moroccan-themed lounge, an accessory spa, and an awesome rooftop pool lounge, Highbar, with views of the Atlantic Ocean where the event was held. Among the treats that guests were in for at the opening celebration were DJ sets from renowned iPad Djs, AndrewAndrew (check-out their awesome Grub Street Diet! http://newyork.grubstreet.com/2011/06/andrewandrew.html), gold bikini-clad Antoinette-inspired models who were handing out lollipops and Grey Goose popsicles, fire-breathing performers, and some beautifully presented canapés from Tudor House…only in Miami would you see so many bikinis after 11pm!
Among the stars that stopped by the Dream on its inaugural weekend were Nicky Hilton, Maxwell, and Miami nightlife guru David Grutman. Looked like a promising start if I’ve ever seen one.
